Failed Charter Purchase

Hi,

I tried to purchase a village charter that cost 328,000 gold but on arriving the enemy had noted this charter was to be purchased and got there before me (sneaky git lol)

Once my captain arrived back at the village it was sent from the gold used to purchase the charter was not returned to me (either that or someone robbed the captain on the way back)

Am I correct in thinking the gold is returned or is this lost as I can't find anything about it in the rules or these forums?
