Because that is the way the cookie crumbles. Just how the game goes. Kinda sucks I know but really for your first village I think lowland is best, it is the most balanced for resources.

So early in the game there is little point of converting a village, I think the restriction is to stop people from making mistakes. Without advanced banqueting there really is no reason to change.

mm..

I beg to differ, i want to convert my village to highlands asap (need to wait a few more hours).

highlands have a lot better stone/ wood placement for better production with a nearby stockpile than a lowlands has.

banqueting is not the only reason to want other village types after all

MHmmm i love the highlands placement for wood and stone and thats actually one of my favorite village types

Yeah, I have to admit, players whom have already played might see an advantage to do so early. But, in the interest of not hurting the new players, I think it should remain this way at least for awhile. (Or, a big warning screen that isn't easy to click threw about the potential downsides to changing types of villages)
