Question of the day (Wednesday): How would you defend your gates against a battering ram?

with pitch/oil and fire after this (torch or flaming arrow)

May be put some beautiful goats in front of the gate

i would place more archers on gates. also i would place oil spots.

Open the gates of course! If the gates are open the Ram can not hit the gate!

using pitch ( oil pots ) ... it will kill troops around it and burn the battering ram slowly or at least slow downs the troops that are trying to use it for opening the castle gate

DANG some one already suggested it well in that case my goats will be doing a belly dance

Considering the ram is already at the gate
I would use a combination of fire and heavy stuff :
oil pots, flaming arrows and stone throwing.

my solution :

a retractable bridge in front of the gate! So you have a hole when the bridge is retracted and the batteting ram cant even hit the gate !
