I fear as a lone player I am not able to compete without dropping ungodly amount of money.

Not really, you just need a group and there are lots of groups looking for new players. None of us really spent more than just premium

I don't think there is alliance, at least not yet, h15 and h10 though seem more of allies then 10 and 9.
